Visiting Vancouver

In our first taste of Canada, we spent the Easter long weekend in fabulous Vancouver.

With an 8pm departure from Auckland, Lewis enjoyed telling anyone who'd listen that he'd be staying up reeeeally late. We figured he might sleep heavier if he was overtired, so we let him stay up watching that seat-back tv until his eyes were stinging. It proved to be a good call because as soon as the cabin lights dimmed he curled up and slept for several hours. What a good boy. As for Alec, again taking the car seat on board was gold as all totalled he slept nine out of the twelve hours. Winner!

On arrival we collected our embarrassingly big North American car and hit the road. It's weird to say the least to be driving on the right side of the road, but the roads are really wide and well signed so it's been a pretty smooth transition. It feels weird though, as the front passenger, not to feel the pedals at my feet. Sometimes I can't help but instinctively lurch for them - will I ever not be a nervous passenger?!

Easter in Vancouver was gorgeous. It was cool and dry, between 12-15 degrees. We checked out Stanley Park, a 1000 acre island park in the heart of Vancouver. We also visited the lively Granville Island Market, full of seafood fresh off the boat, gourmet foods and artisan stalls. We also loved watching the seaplanes taking off right at the edge of the CBD. Together with Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge, we had fun as a family exploring the city and surrounds. Our next stop is Nelson, 660km east of Vancouver. Bring on snow-capped mountains, crystal clear lakes and the open road.

Muriwai Beach Day Trip

We check out the black volcanic sand on Auckland's west coast with buddies from our London days.

After all the stress of the weeks leading up to leaving Brisbane, it's been great to do hardly anything for the past week. Today though it was time to get some fresh air. Our kiwi mates from our London days, Stu and Mel, suggested Muriwai Beach; a windswept black volcanic sand beach, west of Auckland and it didn't disappoint.

I've actually never seen sand as black and as fine as that at Muriwai. It was beautiful. Alec spent a fair whack of time playing and studying it which was hilarious to watch. Among the highlights, other than spending time with great friends, was climbing through a huge cave and get up close to the gannets nesting on their clifftop perches.

What was truly awesome though was watching all of our kids play together, climbing rocks, drawing in the sand and generally horsing around. Don't get me wrong, they fought too, but when they were sleeping with their mouths gaping on the drive home I knew they'd got plenty out of it. Thanks again to our mates for playing tour guide.
